There is a sense of humour around every corner when you are driving in America. How else to explain those wacky, way-out-in-left-field roadside attractions you will stumble upon? Muffler men, mystery spots and antigravity hills are just the beginning. Here are our top 10 favourite offbeat spots.

1. Roswell, New Mexico:

If you believe “The Truth is Out There”, then the Roswell Incident is already filed away in your memory banks. In 1947, a mysterious object crashed at a nearby ranch. No one would have lost any sleep over it, but the military made a big to-do of hushing it up, and for a lot of people, that sealed it: the aliens had landed! International curiosity and local ingenuity have transformed the city into a quirky extraterrestrial-wannabe zone. Bulbous white heads glow atop the downtown street lamps.
Believers and kitsch-seekers should check out the International UFO Museum and Research Center (www.roswellufomuseum.com), which displays documents supporting the cover-up as well as lots of far-out art and exhibitions. The annual Roswell UFO Festival (www.roswellufofestival.com) beams down over the Fourth of July, with an otherworldly costume parade, guest speakers, workshops and concerts.

2. Salton Sea, California:

California’s largest lake in the middle of its biggest desert is an unexpected sight. After the Colorado River flooded in 1905, it took 1,500 workers and half a million tons of rock to put the river back on course. With no natural outlet, the artificial Salton Sea (www.saltonsea.ca.gov/) is here to stay. Its surface is 220ft below sea level and its waters 30% saltier than the Pacific.

Another unusual sight near the lake’s eastern shore is Salvation Mountain (www.salvationmountain.us), a 100ft-high hill of concrete and hand-mixed adobe, covered with acrylic paint. With the motto “God Never Fails”, it is the vision of folk artist Leonard Knight. Turn off Hwy 111 at Niland, drive east on Beal Road and you cannot miss it.

3. Cadillac Ranch, Texas:

In 1974 the late, local eccentric millionaire Stanley Marsh planted 10 Cadillacs (vintage 1949 to 1963) headlights down in a deserted stretch of dirt outside Amarillo – and then moved them further out in 1997 because of town encroachment. The reason? He said he constructed what has come to be known as Cadillac Ranch (I-40 between exits 60 & 62) in a salute to Route 66, using cars he considered to represent the golden age of car travel. The accepted practice today is to leave your own mark on the art by drawing on the cars. Bring spray paint in case other visitors have not left any around. Occasionally the cars get a makeover, like when they were all painted pink in honour of breast-cancer awareness. To get here, park along the south feeder road, a couple of miles west of Loop 335, and walk the well-worn path.

The ground ̉around here seems to be fertile for growing cars – 18 miles east of Amarillo in Conway, there are five stripped-down VW bugs sprouting on Bug Ranch (Hwy 207 access road). The story goes that in 2002 the owners of a now-defunct convenience-souvenir store at the highway interchange wanted to attract customers, so they built the roadside attraction in parody of the classic Cadillac Ranch. It did not save the store, and the family has moved off, but the slug bugs in the dirt do attract attention. Again, feel free to leave your spray-painted signature. Both sights are visible from the 1-40 and accessible 24/7.

4. World’s Largest Ball of Twine, Minnesota:

There is much ado about which ball of twine actually holds the record these days. But why not pay your respects to the original that started all the fuss? Behold the World’s Largest Ball of Twine in Darwin (www.darwintwineball.com), 62 miles west of Minneapolis on US 12. To be specific, it is the “Largest Built by One Person” – Francis A Johnson wrapped the 17,400lb whopper on his farm over the course of 29 years. Gawk at it in the town gazebo. Better yet, visit the museum beside it and buy your own twine ball starter kit in the gift shop.

5. Wall Drug, South Dakota:

A tourist trap par excellence, this drugstore in South Dakota is famous for its roadside billboards that start advertising “free ice water” several states away, but it is a surprisingly worthy stop. They really do have 5 cent coffee, free ice water and enough diversions and come-ons to warm the heart of schlock-lovers everywhere. Do not miss the animatronic dinosaurs (www.walldrug.com).

6. Meteor Crater, Arizona:

The second most impressive hole in Arizona was formed by a fiery meteor that screamed into the atmosphere about 50,000 years ago, when giant sloths lived in these parts. Meteor Crater (www.meteorcrater.com), 40 miles east of Flagstaff, is an out-of-this-world site for those with a thimbleful of imagination. Nearly a mile across and 600ft deep, there are lookout points around the crater’s edge but no hiking to the bottom. Check out the fun, informative visitor centre.

7. Coral Castle, Florida:

This favoured stop in Homestead is one man’s kitschy do-it-yourself testament to lost love: Latvian immigrant Ed Leedskalnin dug up more than 2.2 million tons of coral rock to build this mock castle. Its engineering was once a bit of mystery, especially since the broken-hearted Romeo worked secretively at night without using any mortar. Some claim that the marvel has unusual electromagnetic properties. (www.coralcastle.com)

8. Lucy the Margate Elephant, New Jersey:

Drive around the beach communities just south of Atlantic City and something massive, gray and kitsch will stop you in your tracks: Lucy the Margate Elephant (www.lucytheelephant.org), a 65ft-high wooden pachyderm constructed in 1881 as a developer’s truly weird scheme to attract land buyers to the area. It was variously used as a hotel, beach cottage, private mansion and last, a tavern, but rowdy patrons almost destroyed her. Now recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, Lucy is open for tours during summer, starting every half hour, weather permitting.

9. Lucas, Kansas:

“Outsider art”, meaning works created outside the bounds of traditional culture, has blossomed in tiny Lucas. Samuel Dinsmoor began it all in 1907 by filling his yard with enormous concrete sculptures espousing his eccentric philosophies. His Garden of Eden is visible from the sidewalk, but paid admission lets you hear some wonderful stories and see his remains in a glass-topped coffin. (www.kansastravel.org/lucaskansas.htm)

10. Unclaimed Baggage Center, Alabama:

Head into downtown Scottsboro on Hwy 279 and follow the signs to the Unclaimed Baggage Center (www.kansastravel.org/lucaskansas.htm). Wait…is that your iPod? The one you left in the seat pocket on that flight from Poughkeepsie? Probably. This Macy’s-sized retail space is the end of the line for the majority of unclaimed bags in the US. After 90 days, the airlines send your lost luggage here. It takes thrift shop-level patience, but there is Tumi luggage, Kate Spade bags, Bruno Magli loafers, cameras, laptops, golf clubs – you name it – all for a fraction of retail.

Everyone of us have some habits. Some of them can be really unusual and very strange. Check out what people said about their habits and feel free to share yours on our FB page

Here is some interesting list that we collected:

Babibu: For example, i hate buying second hand books.. just because i feel when i read a book i’m making a personal intimate connection with the book and it bothers me to know someone else experienced that same thing..? or i eat the food i dislike on my plate, before the yummy food. like the vegetables before the pasta.. or i need to walk on the side of the road farthest from the street and traffic. or whenever a good song comes on i snap my fingers.

Skookum: I read magazines from back to front. No idea why and didn’t realize it until a boyfriend pointed it out. Have tried to correct it, but it feels wrong to read it right.

I also save the best for last.

Am happiest wherever I’m at. There’s a term for this that I can’t remember, but basically; If I’m up, I don’t want to go to bed. If I’m in bed, I don’t want to get up. If I’m in the office at work, I don’t want to go outside but if I’m outside I don’t want to return to the office. If I’m visiting family, I don’t want to leave them after I didn’t want to leave my home to visit them. Etc.

It bothers me if wall hangings are hung too high.

I’m constantly turning lights off. Its such a habit that I’ve turned them off while people are still in the room. Oops. Sorry boss.

I wont fall asleep until I’ve read. Even if its just a paragraph.

My inbox at work has to stay empty. If someone puts something in it, I immediately find another place for it if I can’t get to it right then.

When my hair is shorter, it has to be far enough above or below my collar so that it doesn’t go into my collar. That drives me NUTS.

I don’t like small talk or questions about my day. I know people are just being civil and polite, but ug. I’m polite back and answer according to basic drone protocol, but in my head I’m thinking, “I’M NOT FINE, I’M ANNOYED, YES ITS RAINING, NO I’M NOT STAYING DRY, I CAN’T SUM UP MY WEEKEND IN ONE WORD, AND DON’T TELL ME TO SMILE”.

Sauvignon: Obsession with keeping my feet, floors, and carpets clean. I don’t wear shoes in the house, but I used to have roommates that did. I’d have 2 pairs of slippers just for walking around in the apartment. I also always washed my feet before I got into bed.
Never use the actual erasers on the back of my pencils. They’re in pristine condition.
Eat all the crust off of sandwiches before going in for the middle.
I have a giant collection of movie tickets and admission tickets to various places I’ve went to. They’re not in one place but scattered everywhere. Everytime I find one when I clean, I can’t bear to throw it away. I’m a packrat. Assignments from middle school stashed somewhere.
I hit people I like. I punch, pinch, poke, kick them, not very hard, but they know I mean it all endearingly .

Lysistrata: I eat kiwis whole – skin, stem, everything.

Spoiled_candy: My bed has to be made before I crawl into it. I don’t care if it is made all day, but it has to be just right to fall asleep in.

I wash my pots and pans first, plates and cups next and then all the flatware.

I like to get to work early enough to have one cup of coffee before I start.

I believe in a place for everything and everything in its place.

If you borrow my tools, please put them back exactly where you found them or I cannot find them and get frustrated when I need them.

If my bedroom door is closed it means do not bother me. It is my quiet time. I live with four grandkids and this one is hard for them. They are very sociable.

Santonaci: Well, I have a few, but the one that immediately came to mind is that when I eat multi colored candies (like Skittles or M&Ms, but pretty much any colored candy), I eat them in a specific order of color. Skittles: yellow, green, orange, purple, red. M&M’s: yellow, green, orange, brown, blue, red.

For some reason, yellow and green are always first, and red is always last.

Gipsyerose: I like things put away where they belong.

I don’t like strangers telling me their life story

Bed made when I get up. Sink empty of dishes before going to bed

Dont’ care for loud noise

I don’t like used books for library books because of germs. I know I’m a sick person. but some people read in the bathroom and it grosses me out.

Sun123: Stocking up on sale items that I use regularly, to an extreme (at least to other people). I may have 22 bottles of shampoo or a pantry shelf full of a specific food item because I buy when its cheap.

Im particular about clothing so when I find the shoes or or purse I like, I purchase it in multiples for when they wear out. Finding a shirt I like means buying it multiple colors.

Repetitive items when decorating. Matching pictures hung in a line, candles lined up, set of mugs lined on the counter.

Jellobee: i only fall asleep with music/tv on/people talking and with a fan on
i take multiple choice exams backwards
i don’t like when people cough/sneeze a lot
my favorites folders have to be perfect.. i have a ton of folders
i’m always checking the random articles on wikipedia
i don’t leave the house without washing my face
i spend endless hours doing nothing at barnes and noble
i have to make a grocery list even though i always get the same things and i know them by heart
i have to eat fruit with every meal

Meganr: I love prime numbers. Just the idea of them. Also, if you have the hiccups, holding your breath and taking tiny sips of water will fix it, but ONLY if you stop on a prime number. Try it. See if you can get to 17.

Also, when I’m on the treadmill, I love it when the minutes counter gets to interesting numbers such as 12:34 or 43:21 or 22:22. I try to notice all of the interesting numbers, but I never do – at some point I always space out and forget.

Weird habits that famous people had

Leonardo da Vinci: slept 2 hours per day, for about 20-30minutes every 4 hours during 24h period. This gets him more free time, colorful dreams and strict control over his body.

Cervantes: had to sit in cold water up to the knees before entering a creative state.

Hemingway: used to write text of 5000 words every day.The principle is similar to the athletes’ trainings. Repetition is mother of excellence.

Einstein: he was prepared to think of same problem more hours a day, for many months, until he succeeded in what he planned.

Hail is a form of solid precipitation. It consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, each of which is referred to as a hail stone. At Saint Louis suburb on Saturday hail was golf balls-sized. It is not unusual in this area for hail, but this big is really rare. One user recorded hail through his house window(VDOMKR). He recorded multiple videos, and the longest is about 2 minutes long. You can hear crashing sounds in the video. Police still don’t have any reports about injuries.

It is good when you follow that “go green” idea, with reusing things… But everything has limits. It is not always good to “go green”. In this case is really gross to do that. Items that can be in touch with some body parts are not good for sharing and they should be used for personal use only. There are some things that you simply must buy brand new.

Sex Toys

It is really disgusting to even think about this option. You must use these things as your private toys, which has to be brand new. Even if they can be cleaned, would you want to take a chance of catching something from a piece of rubber or latex?

Cosmetics

Believe it or not, there are people who sell (and buy!) used cosmetics at yard sales and in thrift stores. This is gross on so many levels, not the least of which is that lipstick’s high water content makes it a breeding ground for germs. And don’t even get us started on how a tube of mascara can grow unspeakable bacteria that can lead to eye infections, sties, and worse.

Mattresses

Besides the fact that the very idea of sleeping on a mattress that someone else did god-knows-what on before you got it is just plain gross, there are various health issues involved that make saving money on a used mattress a very bad idea. First, mattresses typically mold to the shape of people’s bodies, so getting comfortable on a used one is going to be tricky. And what is also important, have you ever hear of bed bugs?

Condoms

We’ve heard stories of people selling boxes of condoms and Today Sponges at yard sales and on Craigslist, which just seems like a really, really bad idea. I am not sure if this is really happening. Anyway, if this is truth, that is so gross.

Teeth / Dentures

Dentures are custom made to fit a specific mouth, so finding a pair that will also fit your mouth will be pretty much impossible. Plus, how gross is it to wear someone else’s teeth?

Bathing Suits

Same as underwear… and add in the fact that you can’t even bleach the hell out of a swimsuit to remove the funk of other people’s junk.

Baby Pacifiers

Sure, they can be sterilized and disinfected, but seeing a box of used pacifiers at a yard sale and then sticking them in your infant’s mouth is still pretty yucky.

Underwear

We can’t think of any reason that underwear, those garments you wear next to your genitals, mind you, should ever be purchased used. Check out this lot of “pre-owned” men’s boxer briefs we found on eBay. Doesn’t it look like this guy washed his underwear with something red, so while his listing claims these are white and gray they are actually varying degrees of pink? Not to mention that they’re worn out and the chances of them containing skid marks are fair to excellent.

Stuffed Animals

Since children tend to carry stuffed animals all over the place with them, furry toys tend to harbor lots of germs and bacteria. Most of them cannot be washed without losing their soft, fluffy qualities, so they become little pillows full of nasty germs. Not to mention that they often contain copious amounts of dust mites, which are a major cause of asthma and allergies; especially in vulnerable people like children

Kennedy and the Statue of Liberty, but probably the most incredible one is the portrait of Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

Craig Alan was born in 1971 in San Bernardino, California. Though he was always drawn to the artistic side of life, Craig’s creative luminance did not wholly shine until his family transferred to New Orleans in his youth. It was here that Craig’s capacity for detailed visual interpretation took root. In this city by the sea, rich in its culture and outlets for creative expression, Craig began exploring his own ingenious impulses. Craig’s earliest experimentation took the form of street portraiture, an endeavor that helped him perfect his flair for replicating the human figure and afforded the budding artist a sense of economic autonomy.

Italian barmaid Laura Maggi is the one who makes her bar “Le Cafe” popular among the men of the Italian town of Bagnolo Mella. When she started to wear sexy outfits to work she noticed that male costumers instantly crowded the place, double parking all along the adjacent streets. But the women in town complain about the bar. Wives prohibit their husbands to go there.

Do you remember Shadow Paintings by Rashad Alakbarov we showed you last month? It appears that there are more great artists experimenting with this technique.

Tim Noble and Sue Webster also take ordinary things including rubbish, to make assemblages and then point light to create projected shadows which show a great likeness to something identifiable including self-portraits.

“The art of projection is emblematic of transformative art. The process of transformation, from discarded waste, scrap metal or even taxidermy creatures to a recognizable image, echoes the idea of ‘perceptual psychology’ a form of evaluation used for psychological patients. Noble and Webster are familiar with this process and how people evaluate abstract forms. Throughout their careers they have played with the idea of how humans perceive abstract images and define them with meaning. The result is surprising and powerful as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into figurative ones.”

The Ala Archa National Park is an alpine national park in the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, established in 1976 and located approximately 40 km south of the capital city of Bishkek. The park, which includes the gorge of the Ala-Archa River and the mountains surrounding it, is a popular destination point for weekend picnicers, hikers, horse trekkers, skiers as well as mountain climbers looking for challenging ice, rock and mixed routes. The park is open year round, although the most popular season is late summer and early fall. Every May 1, the Alpinada festival sees hundreds of people camp out in the valley and climb Peak Komsomolets.
