Health insurance for the most part is not a good traveling companion and it is not safe to assume that just because you have coverage in your home town that this coverage extends to you wherever you go, this is just not the case.
When you enroll in a health insurance plan its coverage usually extends to a certain region. When you travel outside that region you may have limited coverage and no coverage if you travel outside the United States. This needs to be understood before you travel abroad and experience a medical issue. No one wants to be caught unexpected in a foreign country, where just trying to communicate is a challenge.
Certainly if you are going on a holiday you probably assume that you will have little need for medical attention while you are away and although this is a fact, there are many people who become injured or very ill while they are on the road and find that they need immediate medical attention. It may even be something as simple as an allergic reaction to a bug bite or something you have eaten but if you do find that you have a need for medical attention then you need to make sure your insurance company is going to pay.

Contacting a representative of your health insurance company and asking the details of coverage if something were to happen in and out of the United States is the first step in making sure you understand what your responsibilities will be. If the company you’re with does not provide coverage, then consider purchasing travelers insurance. These policies will provide coverage for the amount of time you will be traveling.
Travelers health insurance is one to put on your list of things to bring as you list items needed to travel. It can be compared to your American Express card when they say, “Don’t leave home without it”. While this may not be the first thing you think of when you begin to plan your trip, it will be the one thing that will keep you protected as you travel.
